What is Beautiful Discipleship?

We worship a beautiful God.

All God’s diverse attributes work together, even when they seem paradoxical. Justice and mercy. Goodness and truth. Holiness and compassion. All these exhibit a symmetry and perfection that sets God apart from us.

I believe we were created to reflect that beauty in the world.

I believe that mirroring God’s beauty is an essential part of what it means for Christians to imitate Jesus and follow his example.

And I believe that we are failing.

That’s where Beautiful Discipleship comes in.

Our culture forms us in countless ways--toward greed, violence, selfishness, and apathy. Our churches and faith communities (both online and face-to-face) also form us. And increasingly that formation has been toward the same ends as our culture--toward self-righteousness, division, insolence, and cruelty.

But while I do believe that God expects the content of our beliefs to be righteous, God also wants the form of our faith to be beautiful.

The goal here at Beautiful Discipleship is not to tell you what to believe,1 but to guide you into a way of living out your beliefs that more fully reflects God’s beauty.

Here’s how we do that.

  • Weekly posts that explore this understanding of discipleship as something that should grow us in reflecting God’s beauty. Let’s learn together what being discipled into beauty might look like.

  • Monthly guest posts from others who are living out beautiful discipleship in their areas of expertise and spheres of influence.

  • Reviews and recommendations of books and other resources that complement a vision for beautiful discipleship.

  • Occasional series that walk through a passage or shorter book of the Bible, because beautiful discipleship always includes a commitment to being in the Word.

  • Announcements about new developments in our ministry, including podcasts, other articles, progress on book projects, writing practices, and more!
